Psychologist for First Responders

Confidential psychological support for paramedics, police, firefighters, and emergency service professionals from a team who understands the demands of frontline work

Understanding the pressures of first responder work

First responder work can involve repeated exposure to emergencies, trauma, serious injury, death, violence, and situations where decisions need to be made under pressure. Paramedics, police officers, firefighters, and other emergency service workers may also navigate shift work, occupational risks, changing operational demands, and the cumulative impact of supporting people through some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

The culture of first responder work can also shape how support is accessed. Professional identity is often closely connected to capability, resilience, and being able to function under pressure. For some people, this can make it difficult to recognise the benefit of support. Concerns about confidentiality within close-knit teams and professional networks can also influence where and how psychological support is accessed.

MINDCHECK HP provides a confidential space for first responders to focus on their own wellbeing, whether challenges are connected to operational work, personal life, or both.

How we work with first responders

Our psychologists understand the demands of frontline work, including exposure to critical incidents, shift-based work, occupational stress, and the impact that emergency service roles can have on relationships, family life, and wellbeing outside work.

We support first responders across a range of roles and career stages:

What we support

Common reasons first responders come to MINDCHECK HP include stress and anxiety, the psychological impact of critical incidents or distressing experiences, trauma-related difficulties, and burnout and emotional exhaustion.

Sleep difficulties associated with shift work, occupational stress and workplace challenges, and relationship and family difficulties are also common presenting concerns.

We also support first responders with changes in professional identity or career, challenges adjusting to life outside an operational role, and personal challenges that may be unrelated to their work.

Getting started

No referral is required to book a private Telehealth appointment. A Mental Health Treatment Plan from a GP is required only to access a Medicare rebate.

We offer in-person appointments in Brisbane (Greenslopes) and Melbourne (Carlton North), and Telehealth nationally, including for first responders in rural and regional areas for whom local confidential services may be limited. Contact us to make an enquiry or book an appointment.
