MINDCHECK HP is the official Member Assistance Program (MAP) provider for Optometry Australia. All current OA members can access up to three confidential coaching and counselling sessions at no cost, with no GP referral required.
This pathway is completely separate from your workplace and employer. Sessions are confidential, conducted by registered clinical psychologists with experience in supporting health professionals, and available in-person (Brisbane and Melbourne) or via Telehealth nationwide.
Not an OA member? Private bookings are also available.
Optometry sits at an unusual intersection as a clinical health profession operating increasingly within commercial environments. The result is a set of pressures that are distinct from other allied health disciplines and not always well understood by practitioners outside the profession.
Research consistently shows that Australian optometrists experience disproportionately high rates of burnout and psychological distress. A 2019 national survey led by Queensland University of Technology found that 56% of practising Australian optometrists reported high burnout, and 31% experienced depression, anxiety, or moderate to severe psychological distress. Optometrists under 30 were 3.5 times more likely to report significant psychological distress than their older peers, pointing to particular pressure on early-career practitioners navigating the transition from study into clinical practice.
The stressors driving these figures are specific and well-documented. Commercial and productivity pressures within corporate and franchise optometry environments, heavy patient volume, the challenge of maintaining clinical integrity alongside business imperatives, career dissatisfaction, and the emotional labour of managing patients through complex or distressing diagnoses all contribute to poor mental health outcomes in this profession. Many optometrists also carry significant anxiety around AHPRA notifications and regulatory processes, and seeking help can itself feel professionally vulnerable in a small professional community. Together, these factors help explain why many practitioners delay or avoid seeking support.
MINDCHECK HP was built specifically to reduce these barriers.
Our psychologists understand clinical environments, regulated health professions, and the specific pressures that come with working in optometry.
We support optometrists across all career stages and practice settings:
We understand that confidentiality is often the most significant barrier to optometrists seeking support, particularly given the size of the optometry professional community and concerns about being seen or recognised.
All sessions, whether through the OA MAP pathway or as a private client, are completely confidential. We do not share identifying information with Optometry Australia, your employer, your practice, or any other party without your explicit consent. MAP sessions are billed directly through the member program.
For full information on how confidentiality works and what mandatory reporting obligations apply to treating psychologists, see our Confidentiality and Mandatory Reporting page.

Up to three sessions at no cost. No GP referral required. Available in-person or via Telehealth. Completely confidential, not linked to your employer or practice.

For optometrists seeking ongoing support beyond the MAP program, or those who are not current OA members. Medicare rebates may be available with a GP referral and Mental Health Treatment Plan. Private health fund rebates may also apply.
No. MAP sessions are completely confidential. Optometry Australia receives only aggregate, de-identified data about program usage, never individual member details.
The OA MAP program covers up to three sessions at no cost. If ongoing support would be beneficial beyond this, your psychologist can discuss private appointment options, including any Medicare or health fund rebates you may be eligible for.
Yes, and accessing psychological support will not automatically place your registration at risk. Many health professionals avoid seeking help because of this concern, but the threshold for mandatory reporting is very high and is not triggered simply by attending therapy or disclosing personal or professional difficulties. Confidentiality is central to how we operate, and what you discuss in session stays between you and your psychologist, with very limited exceptions required by law. We understand the specific concerns health professionals carry about registration, professional visibility, and being known within a small clinical community.
No referral is needed to access the OA MAP program or to book a private appointment. A GP referral and Mental Health Treatment Plan are required only if you wish to claim a Medicare rebate.
Yes. All sessions are available via a secure, encrypted video platform (Zoom), with no requirement to attend in person. This is particularly useful for optometrists managing busy consulting schedules or those based outside Brisbane or Melbourne.
