We know that deciding to seek psychological support can raise a lot of questions, particularly for health professionals navigating concerns about confidentiality, registration, and what to expect from the process. This page brings together the questions we hear most often. If there is something you would like to know that isn’t covered here, please don’t hesitate to get in touch directly.
A referral isn’t required to book privately. If you’d like to access a Medicare rebate, you’ll need a referral and a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP or psychiatrist.
We support health professionals with a wide range of concerns, both those connected to clinical work and those that are entirely personal. Common reasons health professionals come to us include burnout and compassion fatigue, performance anxiety, imposter syndrome, ADHD and autism, moral distress and moral injury, exam and fellowship stress, sleep difficulties related to shift work, workplace conflict, and the cumulative psychological weight of clinical careers. We also support health professionals and their families with concerns that have nothing to do with their professional role.
Yes, and accessing psychological support will not automatically place your registration at risk. Many health professionals avoid seeking help because of this concern, but the threshold for mandatory reporting is very high and is not triggered simply by attending therapy or disclosing personal or professional difficulties. Confidentiality is central to how we operate, and what you discuss in session stays between you and your psychologist, with very limited exceptions required by law. We understand the specific concerns health professionals carry about registration, professional visibility, and being known within a small clinical community.
Yes, we provide telehealth appointments nationally, alongside in-person appointments at our Brisbane and Melbourne locations.
Your first appointment is a chance for your psychologist to get to know you, who you are, what has brought you to MINDCHECK HP, and what you are hoping to achieve from therapy. You may notice that your psychologist asks more questions in this initial session than in those that follow. This is intentional. Understanding your background, your current circumstances, and your goals allows your psychologist to build a clear picture of your needs before discussing the approach to treatment that is most likely to work for you.
Your psychologist will also explain how sessions at MINDCHECK HP work, including how we use Feedback-Informed Treatment to monitor your progress, and will welcome any questions you have about confidentiality, session structure, or the therapeutic approach. There is no expectation that you will have everything figured out before you arrive. The first session is the beginning of that process.
The relationship between you and your psychologist is one of the most important factors in how well therapy works. Finding the right fit matters. If after your initial session you feel that another psychologist within our practice might suit you better, please let us know. It happens, and we understand. Our team will work with you to find a MINDCHECK HP psychologist whose approach, style, or background feels like a better match, so that your care can continue without interruption and with the support of a team that already understands your world.
