Enhancing Well-being: Introducing the PERMA Model for Health Professionals

By August 31, 2023No Comments

In the demanding world of healthcare, where the focus is often on caring for others, it’s crucial for health professionals to prioritise their own well-being. As caregivers, your own mental, emotional, and physical health directly impacts the quality of care you provide to patients.

The PERMA model—a powerful framework developed by positive psychologist Martin Seligman; is one way you can cultivate a healthier, more fulfilling life for yourself while positively influencing those you care for.

What is the PERMA Model?

The PERMA model outlines five key elements that contribute to overall well-being and happiness. Each letter represents a fundamental aspect of human flourishing:

Positive Emotions (P): Focus on cultivating positive emotions such as joy, gratitude, hope, and contentment. Seek out moments of happiness and learn to appreciate the little things. By nurturing positive emotions within yourself, you’ll create a more vibrant and optimistic mindset.

Engagement (E): Find activities and experiences that allow you to enter a state of flow—a deep engagement where time seems to fly, and you’re fully absorbed. Discover and pursue your passions, hobbies, or meaningful work that ignites your enthusiasm. Engaging in activities that captivate your attention and spark your curiosity will enrich your life.

Relationships (R): Foster and nurture meaningful connections with others. Prioritise building and maintaining healthy relationships with colleagues, family, friends, and support networks. Strong social connections provide support, understanding, and a sense of belonging that are essential for your well-being.

Meaning (M): Seek to understand your personal values, interests, and goals. Reflect on the meaning and purpose in your life, both personally and professionally. By aligning your actions with your values and finding purpose in what you do, you’ll experience a deeper sense of fulfillment and satisfaction.

Accomplishment/Achievement (A): Set and pursue achievable goals that give you a sense of accomplishment. Celebrate your successes and milestones, no matter how small. By recognising your achievements, you’ll boost your self-confidence and motivation to continue striving for excellence.

Over the next 5 weeks we will be exploring practical ways to apply the model to your own life, so keep an eye out! Remember, as health professionals, your well-being is vital not only to your own fulfillment, but also for the care you provide.
